Echizen, Fukui / 岡太神社・大瀧神社
Okamoto and Otaki Shrines
A shrine enshrining the paper goddess "Kawakami Gozen", with a hall said to have "the most complex roof in Japan", a national Important Cultural Property. About 1,500 years ago, legend says, a beautiful princess appeared upstream on the Okamoto River and taught villagers to make paper with the clear water; they revered her as "Kawakami Gozen" and built the shrine. The present hall dates from 1843.
