Nozawa Onsen
The hot spring town has 13 public baths (soto-yu) with natural, free-flowing hot spring water, used every day by local people. Under the "yu-nakama" system that dates back to the Edo period, residents share the costs and take turns cleaning them. Ogama, a village natural monument, is a group of five pools where water of nearly 90 degrees wells up; locals still use it to boil vegetables and eggs, and it is known as "the kitchen of Nozawa Onsen".
