Myoban Yunohana Huts
The Myoban hot spring area is a strong geothermal zone where steam of hot-spring gas spurts from the ground. In about 50 thatched huts here, "yunohana" (hot-spring flowers) have been made since the Edo period by a hut method that is the only one in the world: gas rising through stone paving into blue clay crystallises, grows about 1 mm a day, and is collected after 40-60 days. The huts, which look like Jomon-period dwellings, last three years at most because of the steam and are re-thatched each time.
