Takegawara Onsen
A public bathhouse rebuilt many times since it was built in Meiji 12, completed as a wooden tile-roofed bath in Meiji 35. It was first roofed with bamboo and then re-roofed with tiles, hence the name "Takegawara" (bamboo tile). Now the symbol of Beppu Onsen, it is a grand wooden building in the karahafu style, with a regular bath and the famous sand bath, where attendants cover you with sand warmed by the hot spring as you lie on your back.
