Kirishima, Kagoshima / 高千穂峰
Mt. Takachiho-no-mine
A 1,574 m stratovolcano where the legend of the descent of the heavenly grandson is told, the second peak of Kirishima, with the "Ama-no-Sakahoko" spear on the summit and a superb view. The foot and slopes are covered with primeval forest of red pine, fir, hemlock and oak mixed with deciduous trees, giving fresh green in spring, Miyama-kirishima azaleas in early summer, autumn leaves and rime ice in winter. The trail from Takachiho-gawara to the summit is part of the Kyushu Nature Trail.
