Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple: Nageiredo Hall
Sanbutsuji is a mountain temple on Mt. Mitoku (900 m). Its inner hall, Nageiredo, is a building like no other, set in a hollow of a sheer cliff, and is a National Treasure. Its exact date of construction is unclear; legend says En no Ozunu, founder of Shugendo, threw the whole building in from the flat land with his powers. Seeing it up close requires a hard mountain trail, but it can be viewed from the Nageiredo Yohaijo on the road at the foot, with a telescope.
