Great Camphor Tree of Kamo
Rising in the grounds of Kamo Hachiman Shrine, this camphor tree is about 1,600 years old, 33.5 m around the roots, 24.22 m around the trunk at eye height and about 30 m tall, the largest camphor in Japan; the Environment Agency's 1988 survey of giant trees certified it as Japan's largest. It was already a big tree when the shrine was built in 1123. There is a large hollow at the roots. The autumn festival is held on the third Sunday of November every year, with drumming echoing around.
