Hashima (Gunkanjima)
Hashima, about 40 minutes by boat from Nagasaki Port: a small undersea-coal-mine island made by reclaiming land around a reef. Walled in by sea walls and lined with high-rise reinforced-concrete buildings, it looked like the battleship "Tosa" and came to be called "Gunkanjima" (Battleship Island). At its peak in 1960 about 5,300 people lived there, the highest population density in Japan at the time; the mine closed in 1974. Landing has been possible since 2009, and it was registered in July 2015 as part of the World Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution".
