Fukui Prefectural Varve Museum
At the bottom of Lake Suigetsu, one of the Mikata Five Lakes, 70,000 years of sediment form a striped pattern; these stripes, "varves" (nenko), are recognised as the world standard for dating. The museum displays the world's longest 70,000-year, 45 m varve as stained glass, and has a café where you can eat.
