Daisen, Tottori / 大山寺
Daisenji Temple
A historic temple halfway up Mt. Daisen, the highest peak in the Chugoku region. From the Heian period, at its height it had over 100 temples and more than 3,000 warrior monks, a great training centre rivalling Mt. Hiei, Mt. Yoshino and Mt. Koya. It declined sharply after the Meiji separation of Shinto and Buddhism, and now only 4 halls and 10 sub-temples remain. The main hall, of the Tendai sect, burned in 1928 and was rebuilt in 1951. The Reihokaku treasure hall shows Buddhist art from the Hakuho and Kamakura periods.
