Minamiawaji, Hyogo / 淡路人形座
Awaji Puppet Theatre
Awaji Ningyo-za has carried on "Awaji Ningyo Joruri", a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, since the Edo period and still keeps it alive. Puppeteers, a chanter and a shamisen player perform as one. The puppets are larger than those of Bunraku, made to be seen by audiences outdoors, and quick costume changes and scenery changes are highlights.
