Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum

In Seto, one of Japan's largest pottery-producing areas, this ceramics museum is known to fans as "Aito". Its collection of about 8,900 pieces, from Jomon pottery to contemporary ceramics, mainly from Japan and Asia, is among the largest in Japan. The "Aito Collection" exhibition shows about 500 pieces by region and theme, and changes several times a year. On the grounds are "Tsukurutoko! Togeikan" for pottery-making and painting (no booking needed; kiln-firing takes a month), the old kiln sites "Kama no Kioku I and II" where kilns of the 11th-14th centuries were excavated, and the tea room "Tosuian".

Getting there: By car, about 5 km towards Asuke/Seto from Nagakute IC (Nagoya-Seto Road, via Nisshin JCT on the Tomei); about 10 km towards Seto/Nagakute/Asuke from Nagoya IC (Tomei) or Hongo IC (Meiji Loop); about 7 km towards Nagakute from Seto-Akazu IC (Tokai-Kanjo Expressway). By train, take the Higashiyama subway line from Nagoya to Fujigaoka, change to the Linimo to Toji-shiryokan-minami, then walk 10 minutes towards "Chi no Kyoten Aichi".
