Nagiso, Nagano / 妻籠宿
Tsumago-juku
In the Edo period Tsumago-juku thrived as a key junction of the Nakasendo and the Ina Kaido, and inns, restaurants and souvenir shops still line about 1 km of street. Ahead of the rest of Japan, locals began a movement to preserve the townscape, and in 1976 it became the first place selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Residents keep the three principles of "not selling, not renting, not destroying" their houses and land, handing down a townscape strongly evoking the Edo period.

By car, about 30 minutes from Nakatsugawa IC or 55 minutes from Iida-Yamamoto IC on the Chuo Expressway, or about 2 hours from Shiojiri IC on the Nagano Expressway. From JR Nagiso Station, about 10 minutes by bus or taxi, or about 40 minutes on foot.
