Nagato, Yamaguchi / 大寧寺
Taineiji Temple
A leading Soto Zen temple said to have been founded in 1410 by the deputy governor Washizu Hirotada; its formal name is Zuiun Banzaizan Taineigokoku Zenji. Founded in the Muromachi period, it flourished so much it was called "the Koya of the west", and it is known as the place where the Ouchi clan, who rooted Kyoto-style culture in Yamaguchi, came to their end. Nagato Yumoto Onsen was found by a priest of the temple following an oracle of the Sumiyoshi deity, and the temple still owns the source. The grounds, with the Banjaku Bridge and mossy sixteen arhats, are famous for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.
