Taga, Shiga / 多賀大社
Taga Taisha Shrine
Long known as "Otaga-san", this is the foremost grand shrine of Shiga Prefecture, enshrining Izanagi and Izanami, the deities who in the Kojiki gave birth to the land of Japan and to the many gods. From the Kamakura to the Edo period its worship spread among samurai and ordinary people, and branch shrines number 239 across the country. The weeping cherries in spring and the autumn leaves at the Okushoin are fine sights, and the shrine welcomes about 1.7 million worshippers a year.
