Sawayama Castle Ruins
Castle ruins on Mt. Sawa (232.5 m) north of Hikone Station, a strategic point near Sekigahara. Built by the Sasaki family, it became the castle of Ishida Mitsunari in 1590, said to have had a five-storey keep. After Mitsunari lost at Sekigahara, Ii Naomasa became its lord, but it was abandoned in 1606 when Hikone Castle was built; many buildings were moved to Hikone Castle and nearby temples, and today only a few remaining stone walls and a stone monument are left.
