Kongorinji Temple (Koto Sanzan)
One of the three Koto Sanzan temples, a Tendai temple founded by Gyoki in the Nara period at the wish of Emperor Shomu. Stone steps lined with azaleas lead from the gate to the main hall. Thanks to the wit of a monk, the main hall Daihikaku, the three-storey pagoda and Niten-mon gate escaped burning by Oda Nobunaga; the main hall, representative of Kamakura-period Japanese-style architecture, is a National Treasure. The head priest's quarters Myojuin have three gardens from different periods, each a Place of Scenic Beauty.
