Sasebo, Nagasaki / 西海橋・新西海橋
Saikai Bridge and New Saikai Bridge
Saikai Bridge, built in 1955 to link Sasebo and the Nishisonogi Peninsula, is an arch bridge 316 m long and 43 m above the sea. The rapid current and whirlpools of the Hario Strait, one of Japan's three great tidal currents, are also famous. Beside it, the New Saikai Bridge, part of the toll road Saikai Pearl Line, has a walkway with four glass windows in the floor at the centre, from which you can look straight down on the whirlpools. It is also known for cherry blossoms, and the "Uzushio Festival" is held when they bloom.
