Motosu, Gifu / 根尾谷淡墨ザクラ
Neodani Usuzumi-zakura Cherry Tree
A lone cherry tree more than 1,500 years old, said to have been planted by Emperor Keitai. Its pale pink buds turn white in full bloom and a pale ink colour as the petals fall, which is said to be the origin of the name "usuzumi" (pale ink). At 17.3 m tall with a trunk 9.4 m round, it is counted with the Yamataka Jindai-zakura in Yamanashi and the Miharu Takizakura in Fukushima as one of the three great cherry trees of Japan, and is a national natural monument.
