Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi / 関門海峡
Kanmon Straits
The name joins the "Kan" of Bakan (today's Shimonoseki) and the "Mon" of Moji; the straits are said to have formed about 6,000 years ago when Honshu and Kyushu were separated. You can cross them overland by the Kanmon Bridge (expressway, cars only), on foot through the Kanmon Tunnel, or by train. At night the lit-up Kanmon Bridge and the night views of Shimonoseki and Moji spread out.
