Yakushima, Kagoshima / 縄文杉
Jomon Sugi
One of the largest old trees among the confirmed Yakusugi, the cedars over 1,000 years old in the forests of Yakushima; theories of its age range from just over 2,000 to 7,200 years. The deep ridges of its surface seem to record its survival through the island's harsh nature, overwhelming those who see it. To protect its roots from being damaged by hikers' feet, a viewing deck has been built close to it.

To the Arakawa trailhead: about 40 minutes by car from Miyanoura Port to the Yakusugi Museum, then about 40 minutes by trail bus to the Arakawa trailhead stop. From the trailhead to Jomon Sugi and back is about 8-10 hours on foot.
