Aomori, Aomori / 地獄沼
Jigoku-numa Pond
About 5 minutes on foot from Sukayu Onsen, this pond formed where hot spring water gathered near an old explosion crater. There are several fumaroles from volcanic activity nearby, venting sulphurous gas and hot water. The pond is so acidic that no fish can live in it, with water at 90 degrees welling up, and you cannot enter it. Steam and the smell of sulphur hang over a bare landscape. The views of Mt. Hakkoda change with the seasons, and in autumn the colourful trees contrast with the greenish pond.
