Hakkoda Ropeway

A 10-minute ride up Mt. Tamoyachi in the Hakkoda range for autumn leaves, alpine wetlands and, in winter, snow monsters (rime-covered trees).

Opening hours

Mar to early Nov: first car 9:00, last up 16:20, last down 16:40. Mid-Nov to Feb: last up 15:40, last down 16:00. Every 15-20 min; about 10 min one way. In October 2026 the first car runs earlier: 8:30 on weekdays, 8:15 on weekends and holidays (may change with the weather).

Closed

Closed for maintenance in early November every year. In 2026 there is no service from November 8 to 17 (maintenance) and November 18 to 20 (power works; the facility is closed on those days). Also closed May 25-31, 2027, for maintenance (planned). No service in winds of 25 m/s or more, or in stormy weather.

Admission

From August 1, 2026: adults (junior high and above) 1,550 yen one way, 2,500 yen return; children (elementary) 450 / 700 yen; preschool free. Groups of 20+: adults 1,450 / 2,300 yen. With a disability certificate: adults 600 / 950 yen, children 350 / 550 yen (one companion pays the same if the certificate is Class 1 / Grade 1).

Getting there

JR bus from Aomori Station to "Hakkoda Ropeway-eki-mae": about 60 min in summer, 80 min in winter, 1,290 yen one way. By car about 24 km from Aomori city (Route 103), 19 km from Aomori-Chuo IC. No taxis wait at the station.

Accessibility

  • Local etiquetteNo coin lockers; the ticket windows at both stations keep bags for 200 yen each. A round trip takes at least about 30 min, or 1 to 1.5 hours with the summit trail (Hakkoda Gode Line). There is no hiking route from the summit station down to the base.
