Hogonji Temple (Chikubushima Kannon)
A Shingon temple on Chikubushima, the 30th temple of the Saigoku 33 Kannon pilgrimage. Its principal Daibenzaiten is one of Japan's three great Benzaiten with Enoshima and Miyajima. The Funa-roka covered corridor to Tsukubusuma Shrine, made from Toyotomi Hideyoshi's boat, is an Important Cultural Property, and the Karamon gate at its entrance, moved from Toyokuni Mausoleum in Kyoto, is a National Treasure. It is said to have begun when Gyoki placed statues of the Four Heavenly Kings in a small hall at Emperor Shomu's command.
