Tottori, Tottori / 白兎神社
Hakuto Shrine
Also called Oto Daimyojin or Usagi-no-miya Hakuto Daimyojin, this shrine is the setting of the myth "The White Hare of Inaba" and has a clear history recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Along the approach is the Mitarashi Pond, where the hare is said to have washed its wounds; its water level stays the same in every season, so it is called the pond that neither falls nor rises. As the birthplace of what is called Japan's first love story, "Hakuto" was named a "Lovers' Sanctuary" in 2010.
