Yorii, Saitama / 鉢形城跡
Hachigata Castle Ruins
A representative castle of the Sengoku period, one of Japan's 100 Fine Castles. It is said to have been built in 1476 by Nagao Kageharu, and was expanded to its present size by Hojo Ujikuni, fourth son of Hojo Ujiyasu of Odawara. In Toyotomi Hideyoshi's attack on Odawara it was besieged by Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu; after holding out for over a month it surrendered on condition the garrison was spared, and was abandoned. Earthworks and deep moats remain.
