Oshu, Iwate / 歴史公園えさし藤原の郷

Esashi Fujiwara no Sato Historical Park

A historical theme park of about 20 hectares where you can follow the Oshu Fujiwara clan and experience the history and culture of the north. Based on careful historical research, it recreates ancient northern forts, Fujiwara no Kiyohira's residence Toyota-no-tachi, the Oshu Fujiwara government office, Hidehira's residence Kyara-no-gosho and the Konjikido golden hall. It is known as a location for NHK historical dramas and many films and TV programmes. Regular performances of the local "Esashi Shishi-odori" deer dance are held every Sunday from late April to mid-November (twice a day, 11:00 and 14:00, about 30 minutes each).

Getting there

About 15 minutes by car from Mizusawa-Esashi Station (Tohoku Shinkansen), about 25 minutes from Mizusawa Station (Tohoku Main Line) and about 15 minutes from Mizusawa IC (Tohoku Expressway); about 50 minutes from Iwate Hanamaki Airport and about 1 hour 50 minutes from Sendai Airport. Buses run from Mizusawa Station to Esashi Bus Center in 22 minutes (490 yen) and from Mizusawa-Esashi Station in 20 minutes (370 yen), then take a taxi (buses are infrequent with a change, so a taxi is recommended). About 20 minutes on foot from central Esashi (nearest stop: Odori Koen-mae).
