Shirahama, Wakayama / 円月島
Engetsu Island
A small island, about 130 m north-south, 35 m east-west and 25 m high, called "Engetsu-to" for the round moon-shaped hole in its middle and loved as the symbol of Shirahama. It is thought to have been shaped by waves over many years. Chosen as one of Japan's 100 best sunsets, in spring and autumn the setting sun can sometimes be seen framed in the hole.
