Uki, Kumamoto / 永尾剱神社
Einootsurugi Shrine
An old shrine said to have been founded in 713, enshrining the sea god Watatsumi and also called "Tsurugi Shrine". It is known for its ray-shaped ema plaques and its torii standing in the sea, whose look changes between high and low tide. On the 1st day of the 8th lunar month the "Hassaku Festival" is held, coinciding with viewing of the "shiranui", a line of lights that appears offshore, and the grounds are crowded with visitors.
