Eiheiji, Fukui / 大本山永平寺
Eiheiji Temple
A Zen training monastery founded by Zen master Dogen in 1244. More than 70 halls stand in the deep mountain grounds; the seven main halls, the "shichido garan" (Dharma hall, Buddha hall, monks' hall, kitchen, main gate, toilet and bath), are especially important as pure places where monks train. Many monks still carry out strict training every day, and visitors can glimpse their practice.
