Mima, Tokushima / 脇町うだつの町並み
Wakimachi Udatsu Townscape
A merchant town on Minami-machi street that thrived on indigo and silk from the mid-Edo period, prospering as a shipping port on the Yoshino River, where at one time over 100 indigo merchants flourished. The houses show "udatsu", fire walls projecting from the second floor between neighbouring houses, tiled and topped with crested ridge-end tiles, a symbol of a house's standing; together with lattice doors and white-walled storehouses they tell of past prosperity. It was selected in 1988 as Japan's 28th Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
