Iida, Nagano / 天龍峡
Tenryukyo Gorge
A gorge about 2 km long from north to south in southern Iida, formed by erosion of the Tenryu River, with white granite cliffs and strange rocks along the river; cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves change its look. It was named in 1847 by the Confucian scholar Sakatani Roro, and in the Meiji era the calligrapher Kusakabe Meikaku named ten features the "Ten Sights of Tenryukyo"; the tower-like rock "Ryukakuho" symbolises the gorge. Walking paths lead to the Tsutsuji suspension bridge, the viewpoint on top of Ryukakuho and "Sorasanpo Tenryukyo", a walkway under the Tenryukyo Bridge, and river boats show the cliffs from the water.
