Taketomi Island Village
Selected in 1987 as a national preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, keeping an Okinawan townscape. Taketomi, a low oval coral island about 6 km southwest of Ishigaki, has three villages near its centre (Higashi, Nishi and Nakasuji) that preserve the look of old farming villages: red-tiled houses surrounded by coral limestone walls and fukugi trees line lanes of white sand.
