Bungo-Ono, Oita / 滞迫峡（たいざこきょう）
Taizako Gorge
A gorge along the Okudake River, walled by cliffs of welded tuff with well-developed columnar joints, up to 70 m high in places, seen from the Okudake Bridge. Rocks formed by volcanic activity about 15 million years ago are exposed on the valley floor, and upstream there is a cave where carbonised wood, baked in a pyroclastic flow, lies buried.
