Fukaura, Aomori / 千畳敷海岸
Senjojiki Coast (Fukaura)
A vast rock shelf where a lord is said to have once spread a thousand tatami mats for a banquet, with strange rocks named Ebisu-iwa and Kabuto-iwa lining the coast. It is a famous sunset spot, chosen as one of the "100 Best Sunsets in Japan", and one of the "55 best swimming beaches", with sea bathing in summer. From January to February a huge "ice curtain" forms on the cliff by Senjojiki Station as water seeping from the rock freezes in the cold wind from the Sea of Japan. The unstaffed station on the Gono Line, served by the "Resort Shirakami" rapid, is just across the road, and some trains stop for about 15 minutes so passengers can walk around.
