Closed

Main Building closed on Tuesdays (next weekday if a holiday); the Canal Building has no regular closing day. Both close December 29 - January 3; occasional extra closures.

Admission

Main Building: adults 400 yen (300 in winter), high school students and Otaru residents 70+ 200 yen (150). Canal Building: adults 300 yen, high school etc. 150 yen. Junior high and under free; 20% off for groups of 20+. Free for holders of a disability certificate and their carers. Winter rates apply from early November to late April (summer rates at the Main Building: April 29 - November 3, 2026). Combined ticket for both buildings and the former NYK Otaru Branch: 600 yen (valid 2 opening days).

Getting there

Main Building: from stop 3 at Otaru Station bus terminal, take the bus for Otaru Aquarium via Takashima (route 10) to "Sogo Hakubutsukan", then 3 min on foot (buses via Akaiwa do not stop there). Canal Building: about 10 min on foot from Otaru Station toward the canal. The two are about 1.5 km (20 min) apart along the North Canal path.

Parking

Free parking: 120 spaces in front of the Main Building, 12 at the Canal Building (about 100 m north of the entrance). No parking at the Main Building's Temiya entrance.

Payment

At both ticket desks: credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, AMEX, etc.), e-money (transport IC, iD, etc.) and QR payments (PayPay, Alipay, WeChat Pay, etc.). Cannot be combined with cash; receipts only for cash payments.
