Obi Castle Town
Obi in Nichinan prospered for about 280 years from 1588 as the castle town of the Ito clan (51,000 koku). Its townscape of stone walls and samurai houses built with Obi stone and Obi cedar, called "the little Kyoto of Kyushu", was in 1977 the first in Kyushu to be selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Around the Obi Castle main gate are the Yoshokan, the former domain school Shintokudo and the Obi Castle Historical Museum; the old main-enclosure site, lined with 140-year-old Obi cedars over a carpet of moss, is called "the forest of healing".
