Gion Shrine (Nichinan)
Heading south from Miyazaki on Route 220 you reach Umegahama, known as a surf point; nearby is this unusual shrine with its main hall inside a cave. The deities on each side of the entrance are the dragon god (Yamata no Orochi) and the water god (Mizuhanome), and inside there is a dragon-shaped rock. From the cool cave you look up at the red torii gate standing out against the sky above the road. Near Umegahama, do not miss the viewpoint called "Lion Rock".
