Niozaza Historic Road (Usuki)
Niozaza, at the foot of Usuki Castle, is a hill of tuff formed from Aso volcanic ash, where roads were cut through the rock. Its narrow lanes keep the feel of a castle town, with high stone walls, tiled roofs, white-walled buildings and many temples along the slopes; the "kiritoshi" cutting in front of the former Shinko-ji is one of Usuki's signature views. It was chosen among Japan's 100 best urban landscapes in November 1993.
