The National Museum of Art, Osaka
A rare fully underground art museum, rebuilt in Nakanoshima in 2004 after opening in 1977 in Expo '70 Commemorative Park, collecting and showing mainly contemporary art from Japan and abroad; it holds about 8,300 works. Its exterior, designed by Argentine-born Cesar Pelli, evokes the vitality of bamboo and the growth of contemporary art.
