Koya, Wakayama / 壇上伽藍
Danjo Garan (Koyasan)
The first place Kobo Daishi Kukai developed when he opened Mt. Koya; built from 817 with his disciples, it took ten-odd to twenty years to complete. It is the centre of faith as "the place associated with Kobo Daishi" and symbolises the Womb Realm mandala. Visitors are advised to go round clockwise, past the Kondo (the main hall of Koyasan), the vermilion Konpon Daito pagoda and the Miedo where Kobo Daishi lived.
