Karuizawa
A highland resort at 1,000 m, developed as an international health retreat and one of Japan's leading resorts since the first holiday home was built in 1888. Mountains led by Mt. Asama, lakes and waterfalls, quiet villa districts and peaceful mountain villages loved by writers and painters remain; the north of the town lies in Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park, and hiking and cycling are recommended in the green season.
