Ono, Fukui / 越前大野城
Echizen Ono Castle
A castle built by Kanamori Nagachika, one of Oda Nobunaga's elite "Akahoro-shu" retainers, completed over four years from 1576. Its nozura-zumi stone walls are a prefectural cultural property, and the present castle was rebuilt in 1968, displaying belongings of successive lords. From late autumn to spring, weather permitting, the whole Ono basin fills with a sea of clouds and the castle alone seems to float, drawing attention as "the castle in the sky"; it is one of the "Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles".
