Tamba, Hyogo / 白毫寺
Byakugoji Temple
A Tendai temple of about 1,300 years, said to have been founded in 705 by the hermit Hodo, and named because its principal image, Yakushi Nyorai, was said to shine from the white curl (byakugo) between its brows. In early summer the "kushaku-fuji" wisteria blooms like a purple shower, and the "Kushaku Fuji Festival" is held every early May, with the wisteria lit up at night. The grounds also have autumn leaves, rhododendrons in spring and crape myrtle in summer.
