Minato, Tokyo / 増上寺
Zojoji Temple
Zojoji, a quiet landmark right by Shiba Park and Tokyo Tower, holds the tombs of six Tokugawa shoguns. Its Sangedatsumon gate, in traditional Buddhist style, is the only structure that survived the Second World War. It was a subject for artists, and Utagawa Hiroshige depicted it in "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". The "Zojoji Treasure Gallery", opened in 2015, shows works by the painter Kano Kazunobu and a model of the Taitokuin mausoleum where a Tokugawa shogun is buried; next to it is a small garden of Jizo statues for children's health and growth.
