Tarumizu Ruins / Mine no Ura
Beyond Yamadera, one of Yamagata's most famous sights, lies an area called "Ura-Yamadera", formally "Mine no Ura", said to be where Jikaku Daishi Ennin, who founded Yamadera, planned the temple. It has spots such as Senjuin, Eboshi-iwa and training sites, and its best-known is the Tarumizu Ruins, about 15 minutes on foot from the trail entrance, where a huge honeycomb-like rock face and a torii suddenly appear. Mountain ascetics trained here until the Taisho era; Fudo Myoo is enshrined in a crack in the rock, and ascetic training sites and a gorinto cave remain.
