Hagi, Yamaguchi / 須佐ホルンフェルス
Susa Hornfels
A cliff on the coast of Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park, formed about 15 million years ago under the heat of magma: layers of sand and mud were intruded by hot gabbro and metamorphosed. Its striped layers of grey-white and black, about 12 m high, are among "Japan's 100 geological sites". You can walk down the path to look up at the rock from below. From May to October the Susa Bay sightseeing boat runs.
