Kazamaura, Aomori / 下風呂温泉郷

Shimofuro Onsen

A hot spring village in Kazamaura on the Shimokita Peninsula at the northern tip of Honshu, facing the Tsugaru Strait with Hokkaido across the water, with milky sulphur springs used since the Muromachi period. You can bathe watching the sunset over the sea, or the fishing-boat lights at night, and enjoy fresh seafood from the strait. Three different springs rise within 100 m, which is rare in Japan, all flowing straight from the source; "Shimofuro Onsen Kaikyo no Yu" has two types of water, "Oyu" and "Shinyu". The "phantom Oma railway", abandoned under construction in 1943, is now a walking path over an arch bridge with a foot bath (closed in winter).
