Sanriku Railway

Since March 23, 2019 the 163 km Rias Line from Kuji to Sakari has run as one line, the longest third-sector railway in Japan.

Admission

Fares depend on the section. The 2-day all-line pass (valid any day) is 6,500 yen for adults and 3,250 yen for children. One-day section passes on weekends and holidays cost (adult) 1,700 yen Sakari-Kamaishi, 2,700 yen Kamaishi-Miyako and 2,900 yen Miyako-Kuji.

Getting there

The Rias Line runs from Kuji to Sakari. Miyako Station is shared with JR East; Jodogahama is 20 min by bus and the Miyako fish and vegetable market is an 8-min walk.

Payment

On one-man trains, board at the front door and take a numbered ticket. When getting off, check the fare on the board behind the driver and put the fare (or your ticket) into the fare box with the numbered ticket. At staffed stations you can buy a ticket before boarding.

Accessibility

Wheelchairs up to about 120 cm long/high and 70 cm wide can be used (ask about larger ones). Many stations are unstaffed, so contact the nearest station or the passenger sales department (0193-62-7000) in advance; bookings open one month before travel. Guide, hearing and service dogs can travel free under set conditions. Miyako Station has lifts to the platforms.
