Nakijin, Okinawa / 今帰仁城跡
Nakijin Castle Ruins
The main castle of the Hokuzan king in the Sanzan period, when Ryukyu was divided into the three areas of Hokuzan, Chuzan and Nanzan; also called Hokuzan Castle. Built on a hill 90-100 m high with a 70-80 m valley to the east, its walls of Paleozoic limestone are 3-8 m high and reach 1.5 km in length; inside are ten enclosures, with a stone-paved path from the gate to the great court. It was registered as a World Heritage site in December 2000.
